The 50/50 Fallacy

A couple who had been married more than 50 years once said to me that “there is no perfect marriage.” For someone like me who grew up watching classic Hollywood movies that’s a strange notion. As the screen faded to black and the end credits came up, you just knew that the guy and the girl were going to love happily ever after. And so sometimes people search for that perfect person, with whom they are never going to have a disagreement, where the sex is always going to be hot, where the person is always going to know how you are feeling and know just what to say…only that’s not real life. Every couple I have interviewed , no matter how well suited they are for each other, has had to work at their marriage at some point. But it is the commitment that counts. I love her. He loves me. I want her to be happy. She wants me to be happy.
