Longer Tour of Duty

AP story today about 1250 Marines (2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment) who are being ordered to stay longer in Afghanistan to further train the Afghan Security Forces. This has come on the heels of 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit being ordered to stay a month longer in Afghanistan. This is obviously not anything new with longer, and multiple deployments over the course of the war. And I am sure there is very important work being done in training the Afghan police, and good reason for these Marines to be asked to stay a month longer, but what is the long term answer to these deployment issues? This war on terror, which has so many facets to it, how are we going to fight it without overextending our troops. People are not in favor of a draft and I am not advocating one, but it seems like just as with social security, police forces, fire departments, good roads, energy - and on and on - people want results without having to pay a price. We have come a long way in this country from "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." where is that spirit?
