A Salute To Military Brides

Jacquelyn Basney, owner of Angelique's Bridal Salon in Blaine, Minnesota is honoring folks in the military who want ot get married by giving away 100 free bridal gowns to the first 100 military wives who write a short essay about why they should get a free wedding dress. And that's not all! Addie Lane Floral is donating a total of $1,000 toward wedding flowers, and Formal Affair Tuxedos will offer free tuxedo rentals for an entire wedding party.

What a wonderful thing these people are doing to help couples who have dedicated their lives ot serving the U.S.A. (and, let's face it, whether it's the man, the woman or both actively serving in the military - both husband and wife are dedicating a piece of their lives to their country).

Longer Tour of Duty

AP story today about 1250 Marines (2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment) who are being ordered to stay longer in Afghanistan to further train the Afghan Security Forces. This has come on the heels of 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit being ordered to stay a month longer in Afghanistan. This is obviously not anything new with longer, and multiple deployments over the course of the war. And I am sure there is very important work being done in training the Afghan police, and good reason for these Marines to be asked to stay a month longer, but what is the long term answer to these deployment issues? This war on terror, which has so many facets to it, how are we going to fight it without overextending our troops. People are not in favor of a draft and I am not advocating one, but it seems like just as with social security, police forces, fire departments, good roads, energy - and on and on - people want results without having to pay a price. We have come a long way in this country from "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." where is that spirit?

We've interviewed hundreds of Golden Rules couples married 50 years or more and most of them discuss the importance of finances in the success of their marriage. I don't think a single couple ever said that money was the key to happiness, but at the same time, most of them talk about the "other' form of cheating - money. Couples go into marriage knowing that being faithful is incredibly important. It is one of the basis for trust in a marriage. But what couples don't discuss as much, is faithfulness about money. Do you do things with your joint finances that your spouse would not approve of? Do you hide what you spend money on? Are you secretive?

The other thing I learned from the couples married 50 years or more, is have the conversations about financial issues before you get married. Discuss how you both feel about saving vs. spending? Paying for things with cash vs. credit? These are big issues in a marriage.

Check out the article at CNN.com titled "Honey, I cheated with your checkbook."

Marriage Retreat Strengthens Military Couples

The U.S. Air Force Air Combat Command issued the following press release:
By Airman 1st Class Samantha S. Crane366th Fighter Wing Public Affairs Office

Thirty two enlisted families traveled to Cascade, Idaho, July 11 through 13 to participate in a chapel-hosted marriage retreat used to prepare couples for an extended separation. The weekend focused on giving families a chance to spend time together before a deployment with three class sessions focusing on how to strengthen communication and what to expect before, during and after a deployment.

It sounds like the retreatcovered so many of the issues that are unique to military couples. That's what we try to do here at The Golden Rules, give couples some first-hand advice from other military couples who have dealt with these same issues. Realistic expectations and communication - the two things mentioned above - are always great places to start.

An article I recently read in New York Magazine (and featured in www.allaboutweddinggowns.com) went through some of the tips from a wedding gown designer including recent trends like wearing a colored sash and whether a bride should wear white or ivory. Ok, we're all about tradition and love the idea of the bride wearing white but at least hear her out. If you're going to be considering price, and what is going to be most flattering (and who isn't), then perhaps ivory is worth a second look.

And check out the other subjects in the "All About" series from The Golden Rules.

As Wars Lengthen, Greater Toll On Military Families

An article by the Associated Press again raises the ongoing problem of multple deployments on military marriages and families. Everyone seems to agree that the military is doing more and more to help couples and husbands and wives in the military who are separated for long periods because of deployments and who must deal with issues that no other couples must face (of course, the spouses of firemen and policement face loss of life concerns but even with the great work that firemen and policemen do, the danger isn't comparable to to what combat troops face and there are not the extended separation issues).

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080720/ap_on_re_us/military_scarred_families

What is particularly devastating is the mention in this article (and a topic you don't hear discussed nearly as often as the effect of military service on a spouse) of the effect of deployment non children.

Please, read the article and let us know what you think.

D

Celebrity Advice on Marriage (no, I'm not joking)

Recent post in the Deseret News (Salt Lake City) by Doug Robinson pokes fun at celebrities and their "expert" advice on a whole range of topics from politics to marriage. He says:

"Jessica Simpson once offered marriage advice and reportedly was offered $1 million for a marriage advice book. Uh, this was before she divorced Nick Whatshisname. Looking for more marital advice from the Fidelity Capital of the World? Will Smith and Kate Hudson have dished it out, among many others.

Usually, the maturity level of a movie star seems to be at least a decade behind the rest of the population. How many times do we read about an actress or actor starting a family for the first time somewhere in his or her late 30s or 40s gushing about the joys of parenting and a stable marriage and family life and spending time with the kids and blah blah blah, as if she or he just discovered cold fusion. Yeah, the rest of us figured all that out, oh, somewhere shortly after college."

Well, I have to admit, not sure I figured it out shortly after college but at least thegoldenrulesoflife.com tries to share the advice of the real experts on marriage, couples that have been married 50 years or more. I mean, I'm not shy, I have opinions on the subject and some advice of my own to give but I've always said - it's just one guys opinion. So why do celebs feel like their perspective warrants special respect? I truly do appreciate people, celebrities or other people, who want to get involved in the political process but...marriage advice? Really? And even in politics, can't someone say "I like this guy, here is why, but that's just what I think. You make up your own mind." Wouldn't that be refreshing?

Evangelicals and Politics

It is an election year and many Americans (still, too few) are engaged in the political process. Not enough Americans can name who the top two Democratic contenders (Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton) are and the Republican nominee (John McCain). Fewer still have actually taken the time to understand what each candidate professes to believe and what one can expect from them were they to be president.

So...what to make of an Associated Press article that says Evangelicals say faith is now too political. Several Christian leaders have released a statement called "An Evangelical Manifesto" which condemns Christians on the left and right of the political spectrum for expressing political views as Christians without regard to the truth of the Bible. The Manifesto describes some Christians as "useful idiots" for one political party or the other.

It is an interesting perspective and I would love to hear what you all think. I, for one, am not sure (and I have not read the Manifesto) how anyone can completely separate their faith from how they feel politically. But if what I am reading in the Associated Press article is correct, that is not what the Manifesto is suggesting. Rather, it is suggesting thatusing faith to express political viewpoints, without some basis for those views in the Bible, waters down the Christian faith.

What do you all think? If your faith influences how you vote, do you try and find substantiation in the Bible for what you are feeling is important? Do you look to specific Scripture for guidance?

Army Wives Shoots For Realistic Portrayal

Have not seen the show Army Wives on Lifetime but wondering what you folks think of it. I just read an article where the stars of the show, such as Kim Delaney (formerly of, among other shows, NYPD Blue), put a great deal of effort into making their protrayals realistic. They seem to understand that military couples, especially now during a time of war, deserve a realistic portrayal of what a military marriage is like. The military has even come on board, allowing the show to shoot at Fort Bragg, among other places. I'm excited to see the new season and see how Army Wives depicts military marriages and the issues that are unique to military husbands and wives.
